Shawls handcrafted in Nepal

Traditionally, the fineness of a shawl symbolized nobility or royal favor. It is a gift from the people of the world's highest valleys, mountains, and plateaus.

First imported to the West in the second half of the 18th century, stoles made their way to Great Britain and France, where they were elevated to iconic status as exotic symbols of luxury and social prestige, thanks to the patronage of Queen Victoria and Empress Josephine. Depending on the fashion of the time, shawls served multiple purposes. They were often passed down as heirlooms during key life moments, such as coming of age or a daughter's marriage, and even used as decorative items. Under the English law, which restricted women’s ability to inherit land, these valuable stoles became prized exchange items—objects of great worth that women could wear.

Nepal has always been one of the most sought-after regions for producing these finely crafted stoles. Its proximity to rare materials and centuries-old textile expertise have made it a hub for refined weaving, perfected over millennia.

Today, shawls are a statement accessory, with subtle colors that complement the preciousness of fine merino wool.

We are proud to launch our first three stoles crafted from ultra fine Super 140 merino wool (16.5-micron)— entirely processed dyed and spun in Italy, a standard we’ve cherished at ça va de soi since 1997.
